Power Industry
A considerable challenge for Poland lies in reducing CO2 emissions. Currently, as much as 95 per cent of energy in Poland is generated by coal-fired power plants, utilising domestic deposits. This exceptional position will ensure energy security and independence for Poland. However, many power plants are obsolete and without the necessary upgrades, notably reduction in emissions of harmful flue gas, the Polish power industry is likely to face serious problems in several years, which may adversely affect Poland's position internationally. Therefore, in line with the European Union's policy assumptions, it is worthwhile using own energy resources already today, and focus on effective upgrade of the existing power plants. The new energy policy seeks to contribute to the establishment of a single energy market in the EU and to reduce the dependence on imported energy carriers. The assumptions of the policy are ambitious: by the end of 2020, the European Union should reduce CO2 emission volume by as much as 20 per cent.
